Mastercard 4808: Authorization-Related Chargeback

What the cardholder is claiming

The issuer says the transaction was never properly authorized. That covers several stories under one code: you did not get an authorization approval, you settled after the approval expired (late presentment, absorbed from the retired code 4842), the account number does not exist on the issuer's file (absorbed from the retired code 4812), or you ran multiple authorizations that do not map to completed sales.

The evidence that actually wins

Bank analysts skim responses in minutes against a checklist for this exact code. Lead with the strongest fact; never make them dig.

  • The authorization approval code with the date, time, and amount, matching exactly what settled
  • Proof of settlement timing: the transaction was presented within seven days of authorization (thirty for a preauthorization) and inside the chargeback protection window
  • Authorization logs showing the exact card number that was approved, which answers an account-number-not-on-file claim
  • For multiple-authorization claims, records mapping each authorization to a distinct completed transaction
  • Gateway or terminal logs showing the transaction was authorized online, not force-posted or keyed offline

The honest read

This is a records fight, not a customer fight. Either your processing logs show a clean, timely authorization or they do not, and there is no narrative that papers over a missing approval code. Modern gateways make true 4808s rare, so when one lands, check first whether your processor delayed or recycled the settlement batch, because the defect is often upstream of you. If you actually force-posted or settled stale authorizations, accept the loss and fix the process, since the rules are explicit and the issuer wins on paper.

Nobody can promise you a win; the cardholder's bank decides. What you control is submitting the strongest complete case your records support, on time. Our plain-language guarantees say exactly what that means.
