Mastercard 4999: Domestic Chargeback Dispute (Europe Region Only)

What the cardholder is claiming

A wrapper code for domestic disputes inside Mastercard's Europe region, used when an intra-country transaction is disputed under local-market rules that do not map to a standard reason code. The most common underlying story is processing error: a refund or credit the cardholder was owed posted to their account as a charge instead.

The evidence that actually wins

Bank analysts skim responses in minutes against a checklist for this exact code. Lead with the strongest fact; never make them dig.

  • Transaction records showing exactly what was processed: sale versus refund, amounts, and timestamps
  • Proof a corrective credit was already issued, with the acquirer reference number
  • The receipt, invoice, or agreement establishing what the cardholder was actually owed
  • Terminal or gateway logs ruling out a duplicate or accidentally re-run transaction
  • The underlying domestic-scheme claim documentation, requested through your acquirer, since the code alone does not tell you what is being alleged

The honest read

The code itself tells you almost nothing, so the first move is getting your acquirer to surface the actual domestic claim; you cannot rebut what you have not seen. When it turns out to be the classic refund-run-as-a-sale error, audit your own records before drafting a defense, because merchants lose these to their own till and gateway mistakes more often than to bad-faith cardholders. If your logs show the debit was wrong, issue the credit immediately and document it rather than fighting.

Nobody can promise you a win; the cardholder's bank decides. What you control is submitting the strongest complete case your records support, on time. Our plain-language guarantees say exactly what that means.
