Visa 10.4: Other Fraud, Card-Absent Environment

What the cardholder is claiming

The cardholder says they did not authorize this online purchase. This is the most common fraud code for e-commerce merchants.

The evidence that actually wins

Bank analysts skim responses in minutes against a checklist for this exact code. Lead with the strongest fact; never make them dig.

  • Proof the buyer authenticated: 3D Secure results are the single strongest fact, because authenticated transactions shift liability to the issuer
  • AVS and CVV match results from the authorization
  • Delivery to the cardholder's verified address, or for digital goods, access logs tied to the buyer's device and IP
  • Prior undisputed purchases from the same customer (same card, device, or account)
  • Any customer communication that shows the real cardholder engaged with the order

The honest read

Without 3D Secure, 10.4 is stacked against you: the network starts from the cardholder's claim, and a tracking number alone rarely moves the analyst. With 3DS authentication the liability usually sits with the issuer and the response is close to administrative. If you have no 3DS, no AVS match, and no usage evidence, your money is often better spent enabling 3DS for the future than fighting this one.

Nobody can promise you a win; the cardholder's bank decides. What you control is submitting the strongest complete case your records support, on time. Our plain-language guarantees say exactly what that means.
