Amex reason code F10
Amex F10: Missing Imprint
What the cardholder is claiming
The cardholder says they did not participate in this card-present charge, and Amex has no record that the card was actually read by a terminal or imprinted. This usually fires when a merchant key-entered the card number by hand.
The evidence that actually wins
Bank analysts skim responses in minutes against a checklist for this exact code. Lead with the strongest fact; never make them dig.
- ✓Terminal records showing the card was actually chip-read or swiped, including the POS entry mode from the authorization message
- ✓A physical imprint of the card on the receipt or order form, if one was taken during manual fallback
- ✓Proof the transaction was really card-not-present and simply miscoded, with AVS and CID verification from the original authorization
- ✓A signed receipt or pickup form tying the cardholder to the transaction in person
- ✓Any identity verification performed at the point of sale, such as matching ID or CCTV records with timestamps
The honest read
This code is about liability, not about whether fraud happened. If you key-entered a card without taking an imprint, you accepted the fraud risk the moment you typed the number, and there is usually nothing to argue. The realistic wins are proving the card was actually chip-read or swiped, or proving the charge was a legitimate card-not-present sale that got coded as card-present. If neither is true, refund or accept it, and fix the fallback procedure so keyed entries stop happening.
Nobody can promise you a win; the cardholder's bank decides. What you control is submitting the strongest complete case your records support, on time. Our plain-language guarantees say exactly what that means.
